WhatsApp's Privacy Showdown: India's Court Battles Big Tech Data Rules!

WhatsApp is the most widely used messaging app in India, with hundreds of millions of users. In 2021, WhatsApp introduced a new privacy policy that required users to agree to share their data with Meta, its parent company, for advertising purposes if they wanted to continue using the app. This policy caused a lot of concern among users, who felt they were being forced to accept terms they were not comfortable with. Many people remembered that in 2016, WhatsApp had allowed users to opt out of sharing their data, but the new policy did not give them that choice.

The issue caught the attention of India's Supreme Court, which said that privacy is a fundamental right for all Indians. The court warned WhatsApp and Meta not to take advantage of users' privacy or ignore the Constitution. The Competition Commission of India also got involved, saying that WhatsApp's policy left users with no real choice and could hurt competition by making it harder for other companies to compete. The Commission ordered WhatsApp and Meta to change their behavior and stop sharing user data for five years, but this order was challenged in court.

WhatsApp has now told the Supreme Court that it will let users in India decide if they want to share their data with Meta for advertising. Users who do not want to share their data can still use the app. WhatsApp also said that personal messages are protected by end-to-end encryption, which means only the sender and receiver can read them. Some people think big tech companies should not use their power to make money from users' data, while others believe advertising is a normal business model. The Supreme Court is still deciding what to do, and the outcome could affect how tech companies handle user data in India and possibly in other countries as well.
