Designer Dogs: Cute but Quirky? Vets Reveal Surprising Behavior Truths

Designer dogs like cockapoos, labradoodles, and cavapoos have become very popular in recent years. These dogs are a mix between poodles and other breeds, and many people believe they are easier to train and friendlier than purebred dogs. However, a new study from the Royal Veterinary College suggests that these designer dogs may actually have more behavioural problems than their purebred parents. The study found that mixed-breed dogs, especially cockapoos, were more likely to show aggression, anxiety, and rivalry with other dogs.

The researchers surveyed over 9,400 dog owners in the UK and compared the behaviour of designer breeds to their purebred parents. They looked at issues like fear of loud noises, separation anxiety, and excitability. In more than half of the cases, designer dogs showed more problem behaviours than their parents. For example, if a cocker spaniel parent was anxious, the cockapoo puppy was even more likely to be anxious. Some owners found it very difficult to train their dogs or leave them alone. The study also found that many designer dog owners were first-time dog owners and often relied on advice from friends or social media instead of professionals.

She got Dolly because she thought the breed would be easy to handle, but Dolly became anxious and aggressive, even biting family members. Viv now has to be very cautious and does not recommend cockapoos for families with children. Experts say that a dog's behaviour depends on many factors, not just the breed. Responsible breeding, proper socialisation, and good training are all important. They also warn that the popularity of designer dogs can lead to irresponsible breeding and health problems. Meeting the puppy's parents and getting advice from professionals can help new owners make better choices.
