Samsung Clan Clears Historic $8B Inheritance Tax with Style!
The family that owns Samsung, one of South Korea's biggest companies, has just finished paying a record-breaking inheritance tax bill. The amount was about $8 billion, which is the largest inheritance tax ever paid in South Korea. The payment was made in six parts over five years by Lee Jae-yong, who is now the executive chairman of Samsung Electronics, along with his mother Hong Ra-hee and his sisters Lee Boo-jin and Lee Seo-hyun. This tax was due after the death of Lee Kun-hee, the former chairman, in October 2020.
Samsung is known as a chaebol, which means it is a family-owned business group. The company is involved in many industries, including electronics, construction, heavy industry, and financial services. When Lee Kun-hee passed away, he left behind a fortune worth about 26 trillion won, which included company shares, real estate, and a valuable art collection. The family said that paying taxes is a normal responsibility for citizens. Samsung confirmed that the final payment was made recently, and the total amount is about one and a half times the country's total inheritance tax revenue for 2024.
South Korea has one of the highest inheritance tax rates in the world, at 50 percent. There was some concern that paying such a large tax bill could make it harder for the Lee family to keep control of Samsung. To help pay the tax, the family donated some of Lee Kun-hee's art collection, including works by famous artists like Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali, to museums and cultural organizations in South Korea. Even after paying the tax, the Lee family is still very wealthy, with a combined net worth of more than $45 billion. Their wealth has grown a lot in the past year because the demand for computer chips, especially for artificial intelligence, has increased the value of Samsung Electronics. Samsung is also one of the world's biggest makers of smartphones and TVs. The company was started in 1938 by Lee Byung-chul, who was Lee Jae-yong's grandfather. Now, Lee Jae-yong leads the company and continues the family tradition.
