Ashford's Odeon Set for a Stunning Art-Deco Comeback!

Ashford's former Odeon cinema, which was built in 1936 and has been empty since 2018, is set to undergo a major restoration. The building was last used by Mecca Bingo, but Ashford Borough Council has now revealed new designs that show how the cinema could look once it is brought back to life. The outside of the building will feature an art-deco style, giving it a classic and stylish appearance.

The restoration plans include creating a new performance space where people can enjoy plays, concerts, and other events. There will also be a cafe and bar with an informal workspace, making it a place where people can relax, eat, or even work on their laptops. Additionally, the building will have a gallery for art exhibitions. One of the highlights of the project is the restoration of the ballroom, which will be available for hire for parties, events, or community gatherings.

The council says the project is a response to the community's strong desire for more arts, cultural, and performance spaces in Ashford town centre. The new designs were developed based on feedback from local residents and cultural partners. Some changes to the original plans include increasing the capacity of the studio theatre to up to 212 people, improving the backstage area, and making the entrance and box office more accessible from the High Street. The public can view the plans at a consultation event on 18 September at County Square shopping centre. After the event, the council will submit a planning application. The hope is that the restored cinema will become a vibrant hub for arts and culture in Ashford.
