Student funding to create generation of AI pioneers

Starting in 2026, a new scholarship program called the Sparck AI scholarships will be available to master's students at nine UK universities, including the University of Bristol, Newcastle, Manchester, and Edinburgh. Named after Karen Sparck Jones, a pioneering British computer scientist, these scholarships aim to develop the next generation of artificial intelligence pioneers. The program is fully funded by the government, covering both tuition fees and living expenses, allowing students to focus entirely on their studies and research. This initiative is part of the UK government's 'AI Opportunities Action Plan' and is supported by over £17 million in funding from Westminster.

The Sparck AI scholarships offer more than just financial support. Recipients will gain access to placements at leading AI companies, where they can work alongside industry experts and receive mentorship. This hands-on experience is designed to prepare students for careers in the rapidly evolving AI sector. The University of Bristol, which was named 'AI University of the Year' in 2024, has already made significant investments in AI technology, including the development of the Isambard-AI supercomputer. Vice-chancellor Evelyn Welch expressed enthusiasm about the scholarships, highlighting their potential to foster bold new ideas and nurture exceptional talent in AI research and development. The university has invested over £200 million in AI supercomputing infrastructure to support this mission.

Technology Secretary Peter Kyle emphasized that the scholarships will help students secure highly skilled jobs and contribute to building a workforce ready for the future. Industry leaders like Finn Stevenson, CEO of Flok Health, and representatives from AI talent acquisition firm Beamery, have praised the program for its role in attracting top talent and promoting equal access to opportunities in AI. Applications for the scholarships will open in spring 2026, with the first cohort beginning their studies in autumn 2026. This program represents a significant step forward in strengthening the UK's position as a global leader in artificial intelligence.
