AI GP Receptionist Struggles to Decode Yorkshire Accents, Patients Frustrated
In Rotherham, some doctor's offices have started using a new artificial intelligence system called EMMA to help answer phone calls from patients. The goal is to make it easier for people to get help without waiting on hold for a long time. However, some patients are finding it difficult to use EMMA because the system does not always understand the Yorkshire accent. Healthwatch Rotherham, a group that listens to patients' concerns, has heard from people who say EMMA cannot understand them, especially if they have a strong accent or a speech problem.
Healthwatch visited local community groups, including groups for older people and veterans, to talk about the new system. They found that some people feel left out because they are not comfortable with technology. Kym Gleeson, the manager of Healthwatch, explained that the Yorkshire accent changes from town to town, and EMMA sometimes gets confused by these differences. Some patients said they ended up going to the doctor's office in person because they found it too hard to use the phone system. Others said they felt uncomfortable sharing personal information with a computer.
QuantumLoopAI, the company that created EMMA, says the system is designed to understand many different accents and can speak 17 languages. If EMMA cannot help, the call is sent to a real person. Patients can always ask to speak to a staff member instead of EMMA. The company says that most people are happy with the new system, and more than 90 percent of patients say it has improved their experience. Healthwatch says that patients have the right to ask for help if they need it, and they should talk to their doctor's office if they have problems. The NHS is working with Healthwatch to create guidelines for using AI systems like EMMA in the future.
