Gallery Sparks Debate by Showcasing AI Art in Bold New Exhibit

A photography gallery in Northern Ireland is getting a lot of attention for showing pictures made by artificial intelligence, or AI. The gallery, called Belfast Exposed, is led by Deirdre Robb. She says that the AI images are controversial, but they are meant to make people think and ask questions. Some photographers and artists are not happy about the gallery's decision. Chloe Austin, a local artist, believes that AI art takes away from the hard work of real artists. She says that AI cannot include culture, memories, or language because it only uses data from the internet. Chloe feels that art should connect people, but AI art cannot do that. She is worried that AI is making it harder for artists to find jobs, because anyone can make art with just a few words typed into a computer.

The AI images are part of an exhibition called 'Beneath the Surface,' which features work by nine Master of Fine Arts graduates from Ulster University. The artist who made the AI images, Jonny Sheridan, says his work is about the dangers of AI. He used a special computer program to create the pictures, and he says it was not as simple as just pressing a button. Jonny had to come up with ideas, try different things, and make changes many times before he was happy with the results. He thought about everything in the pictures, like the background, the people, the lighting, and the meaning behind each image. Jonny says his art is meant to make people think about how AI could affect jobs and even the future of humanity.

Not everyone agrees with using AI in art. Brendan Harkin, a photographer from Belfast, thinks there should be a rule against using AI in art galleries. He says it is not fair to use AI because it can hurt the environment. The computers that make AI art use a lot of water and energy to stay cool. Brendan also thinks that AI art is not as creative as art made by people. He says that real photography takes skill and imagination, but AI just copies things from the internet. Brendan wishes people would focus more on the art itself, instead of just talking about the technology. The gallery says it has always shown art that makes people think, even if it is controversial. The debate about AI art is making people talk about what art really means and how it might change in the future.
