Malala: I never imagined women's rights would be lost so easily

Malala described these restrictions as extreme and nonsensical, saying, 'The restrictions are just so extreme that it does not even make sense to anybody. ' The United Nations has condemned these measures as a form of 'gender apartheid,' which discriminates against individuals based on their sex. Despite the international outcry, the Taliban has defended its policies, claiming they reflect the values of Afghan society and should be respected by the global community. In response to the ongoing crisis, Malala has taken on the role of executive producer for a new documentary titled 'Bread & Roses,' which chronicles the lives of three Afghan women as they navigate the harsh realities of life under Taliban rule. The film features Zahra, a dentist who was forced to abandon her practice, Taranom, an activist who fled the country, and Sharifa, a government employee who lost her job and independence. Malala emphasized that the film is not just about these three women but represents the stories of the 20 million Afghan girls and women whose voices may not be heard. Directed by Afghan filmmaker Sahra Mani, 'Bread & Roses' aims to shed light on the struggles faced by women in Afghanistan. Sahra, who managed to escape the country after the collapse of the US-backed government, has been in contact with women still living there, collecting their stories and experiences. She expressed the importance of showcasing the resilience and talent of young Afghan women who are eager to contribute to society but are now confined to their homes. The documentary captures the protests and demonstrations that took place before the Taliban imposed stricter rules, highlighting the bravery of women who risked their safety to demand their rights. Sahra noted that the project became increasingly challenging as the situation deteriorated, stating, 'We were really honored that these women trusted us to share their stories. ' The film aims to raise awareness about the plight of Afghan women and inspire international support for their cause. Malala believes that it is crucial for the world to stand in solidarity with Afghan women, saying, 'It's our time to be their sisters and be their supporters. ' She hopes that 'Bread & Roses' will encourage more pressure on the Taliban to restore women's rights. The film not only addresses the loss and oppression faced by women but also highlights their resilience and determination to fight for a better future. Malala remarked, 'There's so much for us to learn from the bravery and courage of these Afghan women. ' The title 'Bread & Roses' is inspired by an Afghan saying that connects bread to freedom and self-sufficiency. Sahra explained that bread symbolizes the ability to support oneself and one's family, emphasizing the importance of autonomy. She envisions a future where Afghan women can reclaim their rights and live freely. 'Women in Afghanistan keep changing the tactic,' she said. 'They keep searching for a new way to keep fighting back. ' The documentary is set to be streamed globally on Apple TV+ from November 22, and both Malala and Sahra hope it will shine a light on the ongoing struggles of Afghan women and inspire action from the international community.
