AI's Sharp Eye Spots Tiny Breast Cancer Missed by Humans!

A recent study in Scotland has revealed that artificial intelligence or AI can make a big difference in detecting breast cancer early. The research was led by the University of Aberdeen and NHS Grampian, and it involved more than 10,000 women who went for routine breast screening. The AI tool used in the study is called Mia, which was created by a medical technology company named Kheiron. Mia can look at mammogram scans and highlight small areas that might be cancer, even if they are too tiny for doctors to see with their eyes.

One of the women who took part in the study is Yvonne Cook from Aberdeen. She is in her 60s and went for her regular mammogram in 2023. While waiting, she noticed a sign explaining that AI would be used to help review the scans, and she decided to take part. Not long after, she received a letter asking her to come back for more tests. The doctors explained that the AI had noticed something unusual on her scan. After more checks, they found a small Grade 2 tumour that was too tiny for the human eye to spot. Yvonne said she felt extremely lucky that the AI found her cancer so early. She was quickly given medicine to stop the tumour from growing and then had surgery to remove it.

The results of the study were published in the journal Nature Cancer. The researchers found that using Mia increased the number of cancers found by 10. 4 percent. It also helped reduce the workload for staff and allowed women to get their results faster. Professor Gerald Lip, who is the clinical director for breast screening in north east Scotland, said that AI can really support doctors by finding cancers earlier and making their jobs easier. He explained that without AI, some cancers would not be found until much later, which could make treatment harder. The study will now be expanded to other places in the UK to see if more women can benefit from AI. Yvonne said that if the AI had not found her cancer, it might have grown and spread, making treatment more difficult. She hopes that more people will be helped by AI in the future.
