UK sending more RAF jets to Middle East

The United Kingdom is increasing its military presence in the Middle East by sending more Royal Air Force jets amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced that additional aircraft, including Typhoon fighter jets and air-to-air refueling planes, are being deployed to provide contingency support across the region. Sir Keir made these remarks while traveling to Canada for the G7 summit, where leaders from major world economies are gathering to discuss pressing global issues, including the conflict in the Middle East. During his visit, he met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to talk about security and trade matters. The summit will also include leaders such as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and US President Donald Trump, all focusing on the urgent need to address the crisis in the Middle East.

The Prime Minister did not confirm whether British jets would directly support Israel in military actions, as they did in previous conflicts last year. However, he did mention having a constructive conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about Israel’s safety and security. Iran has issued warnings to the UK, France, and the US, stating that if they support Israel, their military assets in the region could become targets. Chancellor Rachel Reeves highlighted the importance of protecting UK personnel and bases in the Middle East, describing the situation as fast-moving and unpredictable. She stressed that the UK’s role has been defensive, helping Israel protect itself from attacks rather than participating in offensive operations. The UK government also expressed serious concerns about Iran’s nuclear ambitions and urged British nationals in the region to follow official safety advice closely. Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride supported the deployment of jets, stating it was necessary to protect UK assets given the threats from Iran.

In addition to military measures, diplomatic efforts continue, with Sir Keir speaking to Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman about the need to reduce tensions. Meanwhile, Iran launched a new attack on Israel, and Israel responded with strikes on military targets in Tehran. The conflict has resulted in casualties on both sides, with reports of deaths and injuries. Talks between Washington DC and Tehran on Iran’s nuclear program were scheduled but have been canceled due to the worsening situation.
