Lost David Bowie Loft Photo Resurfaces After 56 Years—Rock History Reborn!
A rare and long-lost photograph of the famous musician David Bowie has been discovered after 56 years. The photo was found by David Maynard, who is now 74 years old, while he was cleaning out his loft because of a water leak. The picture shows a young David Bowie, with curly dark blonde hair, backstage at a club. He is surrounded by seven teenagers, four boys and three girls, who were members of the Stockport Schools' Student Union. In 1970, these students had arranged for Bowie to perform at the Poco A Poco Club in Heaton Chapel. Maynard, who was one of the students, always believed he had a photo from that night, but he could not find it for many years. He said, 'I was relieved to find it because I had been going on about this photograph for several years, and I think they thought that I was just making it up and having a fantasy. ' Now, the photo is available for everyone to see.
The original photograph was black and white, but it has been digitally coloured to bring it to life. In the image, Bowie is wearing his stage outfit and is flanked by the students who helped organise the event. Maynard remembers that the night was very hectic and exciting. He said, 'We were all about 17 or 18 years old. We had organised things before, but only on a small scale, like in rugby clubs or railwaymen's clubs. This was a much bigger event, and the club was packed full. ' He also mentioned that many of his old photographs were damaged by the water leak, but this important one was saved.
At the time of the photo, David Bowie was already becoming well-known because of his hit song 'Space Oddity. ' Maynard described Bowie as quiet but personable, saying, 'He had a serious, studious air about him. He looked competent and knew what he was doing. ' After the concert, Bowie missed his train home and had to spend the night at Stockport train station. To remember this, a plaque has been placed at the station. The rediscovered photo has been shared widely on social media, including Bowie's official Instagram page, which has millions of followers. Maynard hopes that Derek Martin, the press photographer who took more pictures that night, or anyone who knows him, will get in touch with Stockport Music Story. This story is a reminder of how important memories can be, and how they can be rediscovered and shared with the world, even after many years.
