AI Chatbot Claude Caught in Spy Games: Chinese Hackers' New Cyber Weapon!

Anthropic, the company behind the AI chatbot Claude, has reported that hackers believed to be working for the Chinese government used their technology to carry out automated cyber attacks. According to Anthropic, these hackers pretended to be legitimate cyber security professionals and tricked Claude into performing a series of small tasks. When combined, these tasks formed a sophisticated campaign that targeted around 30 major organizations worldwide. Anthropic claims this is the first time an AI tool has been used in such an orchestrated cyber espionage operation, but some experts are skeptical and want more evidence to support these claims.

The company discovered the hacking attempts in September. The hackers selected targets such as large technology companies, financial institutions, chemical manufacturers, and government agencies. Using Claude's coding abilities, they created a program that could break into these organizations with minimal human involvement. Anthropic says the chatbot was able to successfully breach several unnamed companies, extract sensitive data, and sort through it to find valuable information. After realizing what was happening, Anthropic banned the hackers from using Claude and notified the affected organizations and law enforcement authorities.

However, not everyone in the cyber security field is convinced by Anthropic's report. Martin Zugec from Bitdefender pointed out that the company did not provide enough verifiable evidence to back up its claims. He believes it is important for companies to share detailed information about how these attacks happen so that others can better understand and defend against AI-driven threats. Other AI firms have also reported similar incidents, such as OpenAI and Microsoft, who said they disrupted hackers from China and other countries using their services. Despite these reports, some critics argue that the technology is still too new and unreliable to be used for fully automated cyber attacks.

Anthropic suggests that the best way to fight AI-powered attacks is to use AI for defense as well. They claim that Claude's abilities can be used to protect organizations from hackers. However, the company admits that Claude made mistakes during the attacks, such as inventing fake login details and claiming to have found secret information that was actually public. These errors show that AI still has limitations and cannot operate completely on its own.
