The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the US airline regulator, has mandated the grounding of certain Boeing 737 Max 9 jets. This decision was made after a part of one such aircraft detached during an Alaska Airlines flight. The FAA has stated that this directive will impact 171 planes.
An Alaska Airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing on Friday, following its departure from the US state of Oregon. United Airlines has confirmed that it has conducted the inspections required by the FAA on some of its fleet of 79 Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft. The removal of some of these planes from service was anticipated to result in approximately 60 cancellations on Saturday, as per the airline's statement.
Earlier, the FAA had announced its intention to temporarily ground certain Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft operated by US airlines or within US territory. The necessary inspections were estimated to take around four to eight hours per aircraft. Turkish Airlines has also grounded its five planes of the same model for inspections. In the incident that occurred on Friday, the Alaska Airlines flight was en route from Portland, Oregon to Ontario, California. The aircraft had ascended to 16,000ft (4,876m) when it initiated its emergency descent. The plane, carrying 177 passengers and crew members, managed to land safely back in Portland.
