'Racing across the world helped us open up'

Caroline and Tom Bridge, a mother and son from Hargrave near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, recently won the BBC One show Race Across the World. This challenging race took them on a journey of 8,700 miles through countries such as China, Nepal, and India. Over 51 days, they traveled across difficult terrains and faced many obstacles. Their determination and teamwork helped them win a £20,000 cash prize. More importantly, the experience helped them open up about personal struggles and grow closer as a family.

Tom, who is 21 years old and has cerebral palsy, shared that the race helped him talk about his condition for the first time. Cerebral palsy affects his right arm and hand, making it feel disconnected from his brain. Before the show, Tom felt uncomfortable and embarrassed discussing his disability. However, opening up on the show was a turning point for him. The positive response from viewers boosted his confidence and helped him accept his condition as something to embrace rather than hide. He expressed pride in his mother and gratitude for the support he received.

Caroline, 60, also found the race to be a life-changing experience. She revealed that before the race, she struggled with her identity beyond being a mother and wife. She felt her sense of purpose had disappeared. The timing of the race was perfect for her, as it gave her a new goal and renewed confidence. Despite initial setbacks, Caroline threw herself into the challenge and learned to adapt. She realized that age should not limit what she can do and felt empowered to take on activities usually associated with younger people. The race not only strengthened her self-belief but also brought her and Tom closer together. They plan to participate in the race again in the near future, showing their commitment to growth and adventure.
