Ilkley Lit Fest: Simon Armitage, Jacqueline Wilson & More Star in Yorkshire's Book Bash!

The Ilkley Literature Festival is set to return this October, bringing together a remarkable line-up of authors, poets, and public figures. Among the headline guests are Jacqueline Wilson, Kate Atkinson, and Simon Armitage, all of whom are well-known for their contributions to literature. The festival, which has been running for 53 years, is one of the oldest and most respected book festivals in the United Kingdom. It will take place in the town of Ilkley, located in West Yorkshire, and is expected to attract thousands of visitors from across the country and even from abroad.

This year’s festival will feature a diverse range of speakers, including journalist Samira Ahmed, Olympic swimmer Mark Foster, tennis coach Judy Murray, and politician Dame Margaret Hodge. The festival will run for 17 days, from 2 to 18 October, and will include a wide variety of events. Andrew Davies, known for his adaptations of classic novels for television, will open the festival by discussing his memoir, An Unsuitable Boy. Dame Jacqueline Wilson will introduce her latest children’s book, Esme Pepper, and share insights from her long and successful career, during which she has written more than 120 books for young readers. Poet Simon Armitage will present his new translation of the ancient epic poem Gilgamesh, offering audiences a chance to hear this classic story in a fresh way.

In addition to author talks and readings, the festival will host a series of book club-style events as part of the National Year of Reading campaign. This initiative, led by the Department for Education and the National Literacy Trust, aims to encourage more people to read and discuss books. Tickets for the festival will be available to the general public starting on 25 August, with priority booking opening on 19 August. The festival is expected to draw around 14,000 visitors, reflecting its strong reputation and the loyalty of its audience. Many attendees return year after year, not only for the festival itself but also to enjoy the welcoming atmosphere of Ilkley and the beauty of West Yorkshire.
