Spark Creativity: Art Battle Against Battery Fires in East London Bins!

In London, a new public art project is being planned to help reduce the number of fires caused by lithium-ion batteries. The London Fire Brigade has noticed a growing number of fires in garbage trucks, and they believe that batteries from small electronic devices are often to blame. These batteries are found in items like vapes, wireless earphones, e-scooters, and children’s toys. When people throw these devices in their regular household bins, the batteries can get crushed during waste collection, which sometimes causes them to catch fire.

The East London Waste Authority, known as ELWA, is taking action to address this issue. They are inviting artists to submit ideas for a public art installation that will encourage people to recycle their small electronics and batteries at special recycling points instead of putting them in the trash. The chosen artwork will travel to different boroughs in East London, including Barking and Dagenham, Havering, Newham, and Redbridge, in 2026. The aim is to raise awareness about the dangers of throwing batteries in the bin and to promote safer recycling habits.

According to Miraj Patel, the chair of ELWA, battery fires in garbage trucks and waste sites are a major challenge for all local authorities. Last year, there were 229 fires in ELWA’s waste facilities, which is a 57 percent increase from the previous year. These fires not only cost the waste industry millions of pounds but also put the safety of workers at risk. The new art project is meant to be eye-catching and memorable, so that more people will remember to recycle their batteries properly. Artists who are interested in participating must submit their proposals by 9:00 AM on February 9th. The hope is that this creative approach will help reduce the number of dangerous battery fires in London and make the city safer for everyone.
