Cool and Green: The School Beating the Heatwave with Net Zero Power

Buntingford First School in Hertfordshire is making headlines for its innovative and eco-friendly design. While over 1,000 schools in England and Wales had to close during a recent heatwave, Buntingford First School remained open and comfortable for its students. The school was built to be net zero, which means it produces as much energy as it uses and tries to avoid making pollution. The classrooms face north, have triple-glazed windows, and use a solar-powered cooling system. These features help keep the inside of the school cool, even when it is very hot outside. Head teacher Vikki Johnston said she was grateful that the children could continue learning in a cool environment and that the heat did not disrupt their education.

The school recently held an assembly to celebrate its net zero certification. Net zero means the school reduces its carbon emissions as much as possible and makes up for any remaining emissions by using renewable energy or planting trees. The building was designed to meet Passivhaus standards, which means it is very energy efficient and comfortable for the people inside. The school opened in 2023 and, in one 15-month period, actually produced more electricity than it used. The building is made with a timber frame, which saved a lot of carbon compared to using concrete. It also has 184 solar panels, an air source heat pump, and a special cooling system. The building is airtight, which helps keep it warm in winter and cool in summer.

The students at Buntingford First School are proud of their school's green credentials. Some are part of the eco committee, which helps the school stay environmentally friendly. One student said she likes that her school helps the environment just by being there. Another student explained that there are machines under the floor that keep the rooms cool automatically. The architect, Mark Ellson, said the building was designed to last for many years, even as the weather changes in the future. The head teacher hopes more schools in Britain will be built to these high standards so that all students can learn in a comfortable and sustainable environment. The project shows that it is possible to create schools that are good for both students and the planet.
