SpaceX will return stranded astronauts next year

NASA has announced that two of its astronauts, Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, will be returning to Earth in February 2025 after spending an extended period in space. Originally, the astronauts were scheduled to complete an eight-day mission aboard the Boeing Starliner spacecraft, which launched on June 5. However, due to several technical issues encountered during the mission, their stay at the International Space Station (ISS) has been extended to nearly eight months. The Starliner spacecraft experienced problems, including helium leaks and malfunctioning thrusters, which prevented it from functioning as intended. As a result, NASA has decided that the Starliner will return to Earth without a crew, and the astronauts will instead return on a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft. This decision allows for a safer and more efficient return for Williams and Wilmore. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson emphasized the importance of safety in space travel during a recent press conference. He acknowledged that space missions carry inherent risks, but he reassured the public that NASA and Boeing are working closely together to address the technical challenges faced by the Starliner. The astronauts are fully aware of the risks involved in their extended stay and have expressed their support for the plans to return home. In the meantime, they will continue to conduct scientific research and perform maintenance tasks aboard the ISS. The Starliner has faced numerous delays in its development, and this mission marks Boeing's first attempt at a crewed flight. The company has been under pressure to ensure the safety of its spacecraft and crew, and they are committed to executing the mission as determined by NASA. With the next SpaceX launch scheduled for the end of September, there will be room for Williams and Wilmore to join the crew on their return journey to Earth.
