Mexico Keeps Schools Open Amid World Cup Buzz and Heatwave Drama!

The Mexican government recently decided not to end the school year early, after first announcing that classes would finish more than a month before the usual date. The original plan was to close schools early to help with traffic during the Fifa World Cup and to protect students from an expected heatwave. Mexico is one of the countries hosting the World Cup, along with the United States and Canada, from June 11 to July 19. When the government first shared the plan, many parents were upset. They worried that ending school early would interrupt their children's education and make it difficult to find childcare for the extra weeks.

The education minister, Mario Delgado, announced on May 7 that schools would close on June 5 instead of July 15. He said the decision was made because of the heatwave, the World Cup, and other reasons. However, the National Union of Parents strongly disagreed, saying that using the World Cup as a reason to stop classes was not acceptable. Many families felt stressed, trying to figure out how to take care of their children for the extra time off.

President Claudia Sheinbaum quickly responded, saying that ending school early was only a suggestion, not a final decision. The education ministry then talked with parents and education experts to get more opinions. After these discussions, the government decided to keep the original school calendar, so classes will now end on July 15. President Sheinbaum also promised that visitors coming for the World Cup would be safe. Security has been a big concern because of recent violence in the country, but the president said that everything, including the stadium and the airport, will be ready for the event. Police are working to make sure everyone can enjoy the World Cup safely.
