‘A huge role in Hong Kong pop culture’: Old Master Q comic strip’s supporting characters celebrated in exhibition

The Old Master Q comic strip is a beloved part of Hong Kong's pop culture. Created in the 1960s by artist Alfonso Wong Kar-hei, who went by the pen name Wong Chak, the comics captured the daily life of the working class with humor and charm. Alfonso Wong passed away in 2017 at the age of 93, but his legacy continues through his son Joseph, who took over the comic series in 1995.

Currently, Quiet Gallery HK is hosting an exhibition titled 'Old Master Q, 'Side C' Exhibition' to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the iconic character. This exhibition focuses on the lesser-known yet equally captivating supporting characters from the comic strip. Characters like Big Potato, Mr Chin, Mr Chiu, and Miss Chen, along with various pets, monsters, and even extraterrestrials, are showcased through life-size prints and artistic reinterpretations in different forms such as painting and sculpture. The interactive display includes comic excerpts that span over six decades, highlighting the unique personalities of these characters.

Howard Lee, the founder of Quiet Gallery, emphasizes the significant impact of Old Master Q comics on Hong Kong's cultural scene, especially during the late 20th century. The characters were not only comical and whimsical but also reflected the everyday experiences of Hong Kong residents. The exhibition aims to entertain visitors while shedding light on the depth and humor of the supporting cast. Lee also notes the importance of preserving Wong Chak's work, stating that the comics documented Hong Kong's evolution over sixty years. By honoring Wong Chak's contributions, the exhibition celebrates the comic's influence on Hong Kong's identity and creative spirit. The exhibition is open at Quiet Gallery HK until December 3rd.
