Rob Brydon, the well-known Welsh actor famous for his role as Uncle Bryn in Gavin & Stacey, is set to return to television as the host of a new game show called Destination X. Brydon has shared that he was inspired by the popular show The Traitors, especially by the way Claudia Winkleman brings a sense of fun and lightness to her hosting. Destination X is a unique competition where 13 contestants are taken to secret locations across Europe. Their challenge is to figure out exactly where they are, using only a series of tricky clues provided through different challenges. The person who is the furthest from the correct answer in each episode is eliminated, and the last contestant standing will win a grand prize of £100,000.

The show adds an extra layer of mystery by having the contestants travel and sleep on a coach with blacked-out windows, so they cannot see where they are going. This makes it even harder for them to guess their location. Each episode features a variety of challenges that reveal clues about their whereabouts. Brydon says he wants to be a bridge between the viewers and the contestants, making sure the focus stays on the players, who come from all walks of life. The group includes a crime fiction writer and a retired detective sergeant, among others.

Brydon is also experimenting with his wardrobe for the show, adding small details to his outfits that hint at the region they are visiting. He encourages viewers to pay attention to what he is wearing, as it might help them solve the mystery. The show’s executive producer, Dan Adamson, says it is exciting to turn all of Europe into a giant board game and that they were not afraid to cast strong players. Brydon has enjoyed watching the creativity and storytelling that happens behind the scenes, as well as seeing how relationships and trust between contestants change over time. Destination X was originally created in Belgium and has already had a US version. The UK series will premiere on Wednesday, 30 July, at 9pm on BBC One.
