From Hogwarts to Canvas: David Bradley’s Colorful New Adventure
David Bradley, a well-known actor famous for his roles in the Harry Potter films and Game of Thrones, recently discovered a new passion: painting. After moving to Leamington Spa in Warwickshire, England, Bradley decided he wanted to try something creative outside of acting. He wandered into the Jephson Gardens Gallery, where he met artist Lynne Gougeon. Bradley was impressed by Lynne's passion for art and asked if she gave lessons. Even though he had never painted before, not even as a child, Lynne agreed to teach him. At first, Bradley found it difficult to use a paintbrush, but Lynne noticed he was eager to learn and picked up the basics quickly.
Bradley began taking two-hour lessons every week. He soon discovered he enjoyed making abstract art, which is art that uses shapes, colors, and lines instead of trying to look like real things. He liked experimenting with different materials, such as plants he found in the park, which he glued to a board and painted in bright, unusual colors. Another painting combined memories of the Dolomite mountains with a stone wall from Derbyshire. Lynne described his art as 'bonkers' and 'brilliant,' saying he was always willing to try new techniques and ideas. Bradley believes that art is for everyone, no matter how skilled you are. He says, 'It's not about how good you are or what you can achieve. Everybody can paint. '
Even though Bradley is still busy with his acting career, sometimes having to miss lessons for important events like the Oscars, he always returns to painting. He showed his work in public for the first time at an exhibition with other students, where many people admired his art and some even wanted to buy it. However, Bradley feels attached to his paintings and prefers to keep them. His family now displays his art in their homes, and he shares a gallery wall with his granddaughter. Bradley says painting has brought him joy and keeps him from ever feeling bored. Sometimes, he wakes up in the middle of the night to add something new to a painting. He enjoys the creative process and finds it hard to know when a painting is finished.
Bradley and Lynne have become good friends through their art lessons. Lynne says their time together is always entertaining, as Bradley shares fascinating stories from his acting career. She describes him as a lively, genuine, and kind person, very different from some of the grumpy characters he has played on screen. Bradley compares Lynne's teaching style to the best directors he has worked with, saying she helps him bring out his best ideas. He is grateful for the chance to explore painting and encourages others to try creative activities, too. Bradley believes that art can bring happiness and excitement to anyone's life, no matter their age or experience.
