Paris Modest Fashion Week: Headscarves Meet Berets in Floral Streetwear Showdown

Paris recently hosted its first Modest Fashion Week, an event that brought together nearly 30 designers from around the world. The collections featured at the show included long, loose-fitting garments and headscarves, which are often worn by Muslim women as part of their religious beliefs. These clothes cover the arms, legs, and sometimes the hair, following the principles of modesty in Islam. The event was especially meaningful because it took place in France, a country where wearing hijabs and other religious clothing has been a topic of debate and is restricted in some public places. Designers and attendees felt that the show was a step toward a more inclusive French culture.

The fashion show was held at Hôtel Le Marois, a grand mansion near the famous Champs-Élysées. The runway was filled with beautiful, flowing dresses in floral prints and soft, nature-inspired colors. Hicran Önal, a designer from Turkey, wore a floral tulle dress and said that romance was a big part of her collection. Her designs mixed shades of blue and pink, creating a dreamy look. Indonesian designer Nada Puspita also used floral themes but kept her lines clean and simple. Australian designer Aisa Hassan was inspired by nature too, but her colors were warmer, with deep greens and reds that reminded people of autumn. She even added a bucket hat to her outfits, showing a bit of her Australian background.

Not all the designs were soft and romantic. Some French brands, like Soutoura and Nour Turbans, showed off a more sporty and bold style. Their clothes were made from nylon and came in black and jewel tones, with boxy shapes that are popular with Gen Z. These styles are similar to what big sports brands like Nike and Adidas have started making for modest fashion. Nour Turbans made a statement by putting a beret over a headscarf, blending French and Muslim styles. The market for modest fashion has grown a lot in the last ten years, with people from different backgrounds buying these clothes. Fatou Doucouré, the founder of Soutoura, said she felt proud to show her collection in Paris. She used to struggle with wearing her hijab in France, but now she feels it does not hold her back. In France, people are not allowed to wear religious clothing in some jobs, like teaching or working for the government, because of the country's rules about keeping religion and public life separate. Still, Fatou believes that Muslim women can do any job and be part of any society.

The show also featured burkinis, which are full-length swimsuits that cover everything except the face, hands, and feet. These are banned in most public swimming pools in France but are allowed on beaches. Turkish brand Mayovera presented a collection of colorful burkinis. For many young women in the audience, the event was a source of joy and pride. Some said they had faced discrimination for wearing headscarves, but seeing so many international designers in Paris made them feel hopeful. They felt that attitudes in France were changing, and people were starting to look beyond what someone wears. The event showed that modest fashion is not just about clothing; it is about identity, acceptance, and the freedom to express oneself.
