Why Pay £70? Cheaper Blockbusters Are Changing the Game Price Race!
The price of video games has been going up, especially for the biggest and most popular ones, known as AAA games. In the UK, these games often cost around £70, and Nintendo recently raised the price of some of its new games to £74. 99. There are even rumors that the next Grand Theft Auto game could be the first to cost $100. This has made many people wonder if these high prices are really worth it. At the same time, some new games that look and feel like AAA games are being sold for much less. Games like ARC Raiders, Split Fiction, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 are priced between £30 and £40, but they still offer great graphics, exciting stories, and lots of fun. Clair Obscur has even won more game of the year awards than any other title.
Alexis Garavaryan, the CEO of Kepler Interactive, the company that published Clair Obscur, explained that their decision to sell the game for less was on purpose. He said that while other companies keep raising their prices, Kepler wants to do the opposite. They think about what the game is really worth and then set a lower price. Garavaryan believes that players are starting to care less about how big or fancy a game is and more about whether it offers something new and interesting. He said that people want games that are unique and memorable, not just ones with the best graphics or the longest stories. This means that the old idea that a game has to be expensive to be good might be changing.
Research shows that most gamers are actually spending less money on new games. Only a small number of people buy new games every month, and many don’t buy any at all. The cost of making games is also going up, especially because computer parts like RAM are getting more expensive. Garavaryan said that Kepler’s goal is to make players feel like they are getting a bargain. He wants people to feel respected for their money and time, and to be able to buy several different games for the price of one big AAA title. Even though Kepler is not a small company, it works with many independent studios to create games that feel special and hand-crafted. Some experts say that while cheaper games are becoming more popular, big AAA games like Resident Evil Requiem and GTA 6 are still the most anticipated. The real challenge for game makers is to stand out and get players’ attention in a world where there are so many choices. Kepler is even making a physical magazine about games, which is unusual in today’s digital world. Garavaryan believes that some people still want products that feel personal and well-made, and he hopes that Kepler’s approach will attract those players.
