US artificial intelligence leader OpenAI applies for GPT-6, GPT-7 trademarks in China
OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence (AI) firm in the United States, has garnered significant attention with its generative AI application, ChatGPT. The company is now seeking to secure trademarks for 'GPT-6' and 'GPT-7', as it continues to push the boundaries of AI technology.
The company has submitted two trademark applications for GPT-6 in China, one under class 9, which pertains to scientific or research apparatus and instruments, and another under class 42, which refers to technological services and design. It has also filed two additional applications for GPT-7 under the same categories. These applications, which are currently under review, were submitted by OpenAI OpCo, the primary entity of the Microsoft-backed start-up based in San Francisco, California. As of now, none of OpenAI's services are available in China, including Hong Kong.
In addition to these applications, the company also filed for 'GPT-4' and 'Whisper' trademarks in April, and another named 'GPT-5' in July. However, none of these have received final approval. Since the launch of ChatGPT a year ago, OpenAI has been enhancing the capabilities of its large language models (LLMs), a type of deep learning algorithm that can achieve general-purpose language understanding and generation. ChatGPT was initially built on GPT-3. 5, which has 175 billion parameters. In March, OpenAI unveiled a more advanced version, GPT-4. The company did not disclose the number of parameters in GPT-4, but US news outlet Semafor reported that it is estimated to be over 1 trillion.
