Lincolnshire's Giant Mosaic Celebrates 80 Years Since WWII's End
Lincoln is preparing a unique public artwork to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two, and the organizers are inviting everyone in Lincolnshire to take part. The project, called 'Our Freedom: Then and Now,' will create a massive digital mosaic using over 5,000 photographs sent in by local people. This mosaic will be printed on aluminum, which is a nod to Lincolnshire's important role in aviation during the war. The finished piece will be displayed at the Lincoln Arts Centre in November, and it will include animation, sound, light, and projection to make the experience more engaging for visitors.
People can submit their images online or attend special drop-in sessions that will be held in different locations around Lincolnshire starting in October. Ben Anderson, the creative and executive director of the Lincoln Arts Centre, explained that this project is Lincolnshire's way of joining a national conversation about the meaning of freedom. He said, 'Built with and for our communities – from RAF Digby to Boston – it honors our wartime past while asking what freedom means today. ' Anderson also pointed out that, with conflicts still happening around the world, this is an important time to reflect on what freedom means to us through art.
The Lincolnshire mosaic is just one of 80 similar projects happening across the UK to commemorate the end of World War Two. The government and Arts Council England are funding these projects to help communities remember and reflect. In addition to the mosaic, Lincoln has also seen the installation of a large steel sculpture shaped like a World War Two bomber aircraft, which was recently lifted into place by a crane. These artworks are meant to encourage people to think about history, community, and the value of freedom.
