Convenience store workers can also get real-time notifications to help find missing people quickly, creating a community safety net.
Researchers are also developing new tools to detect dementia earlier. For example, Fujitsu has created aiGait, which uses artificial intelligence to study how people walk and move. It can spot early signs of dementia, like shuffling or having trouble standing, and gives doctors useful information during check-ups. At Waseda University, scientists are working on a robot called AIREC, which can help with daily tasks like putting on socks, cooking, and folding laundry. They hope that in the future, AIREC will be able to do even more, such as changing adult diapers and preventing bedsores.
Other robots are already being used in care homes to play music, lead stretching exercises, and monitor patients at night. Smaller robots like Poketomo can fit in a pocket and remind people to take their medicine, prepare for the weather, and even have conversations to reduce loneliness. Developers say these robots are designed to support, not replace, human caregivers.
Social support is also important. In Tokyo, the Restaurant of Mistaken Orders lets people with dementia work as servers, giving them a sense of purpose and helping them stay engaged. Customers know their orders might get mixed up, but they enjoy the experience and the chance to connect with others. This shows that while technology can help, human connection and community support are still essential for people living with dementia.
