Art gallery closes over 'decline of high street'

An art gallery located in Brighton has officially closed after more than three decades of operation. The gallery, known as Enter Gallery, announced that it was shutting down due to a noticeable decline in high street shopping and the overwhelming presence of mass-produced art from larger companies. Lawrence Alkin, the founder of Enter Gallery, explained that the changing environment has created challenges that have become increasingly difficult to navigate. He stated, 'Enter Gallery has always been about more than just art; it's been about creating a space for conversation, connection, and creative expression. ' He expressed pride in the gallery's achievements and sadness at the closure, while also showing gratitude for the community that has supported them throughout the years. 'We are incredibly proud of what we've accomplished, and while it is sad to close this chapter, we're grateful for the community that has supported us over the years,' he added. The gallery extended its heartfelt thanks to the artists, staff, and customers who have been part of its journey. In December, Mr. Alkin mentioned that Enter Gallery launched a significant sale, described as a 'make or break' event, in an effort to raise funds. Over the years, Enter Gallery has hosted numerous events and exhibitions featuring well-known figures such as Fatboy Slim and Carl Cox. In 2004, Mr. Alkin organized an event called 'Pop,' which was an urban art gallery that ran for three weeks and showcased works from artists like James Cauty, Jamie Reid, and Banksy. This event was one of the first opportunities for the public to see the work of the elusive street artist Banksy. According to Mr. Alkin, the gallery has sold more than 6,000 prints by Banksy, which is a remarkable achievement. The gallery has also been a venue for many exciting events and exhibitions involving famous artists and musicians, making it a beloved part of the local art scene. The closure of Enter Gallery marks the end of an era, but its impact on the community and the art world will not be forgotten.
