A recent investigation by BBC News has uncovered serious problems with NHS IT systems, which are responsible for managing patients' medical records. The investigation revealed that these IT system failures have resulted in the deaths of three patients and more than 100 instances of serious harm at NHS hospital trusts in England. Furthermore, a Freedom of Information request found that 200,000 medical letters had not been sent due to widespread issues with NHS computer systems. Shockingly, almost half of the hospital trusts with electronic patient systems reported issues that could potentially impact patients. In response to these challenges, NHS England has made a significant investment of £900m over the past two years to introduce new and improved systems. The ultimate goal is to transition to a paperless NHS and ensure seamless access to health information for GPs, hospitals, and care homes. Despite these efforts, the initiative has faced numerous obstacles, leading to the latest deadline being pushed to 2026.
