Hong Kong’s LGBTQ community won’t be hitting streets for annual pride event although ‘Journey with Rainbow GPS’ exhibition adds some colour

This year, the LGBTQ community in Hong Kong has decided not to proceed with their annual pride parade due to concerns over stability, potential restrictions, and the safety of participants. The Hong Kong Pride Parade committee has opted for an alternative approach by organizing an exhibition called 'A Journey with Rainbow GPS' in Kwun Tong, featuring a mini fair and guided tours. Vice-spokeswoman Cuby Lee expressed that the decision to forgo the parade application was made with the safety of the community in mind.

Since its inception in 2008, the Hong Kong Pride Parade has been a significant event. The last full-scale parade took place in 2018, attracting 12,000 attendees. In 2019, a rally was organized instead of a march due to social unrest, and the following years saw the event move online or indoors due to the pandemic. Committee spokeswoman Cynthia Cheung acknowledged that the current climate has led to increased restrictions on public demonstrations, which influenced their decision to hold a more controlled indoor event this year.

Hong Kong has a history of public protests and marches on various social issues, but recent years have seen a decline in such activities. The introduction of the national security law and pandemic-related restrictions have limited public gatherings. Despite these challenges, the committee remains committed to advocating for LGBTQ rights and is exploring new ways to celebrate pride within the constraints. The recent hosting of the 11th Gay Games in Hong Kong, despite facing opposition, is an example of the community's resilience. Cuby Lee emphasized the importance of understanding and respecting different freedoms as a way to combat discrimination.
