How Spiky Dragon Fruit Is Turning Indian Farms Into Cash Cows
Dragon fruit, a bright pink and spiky fruit that grows on cactus plants, is becoming a popular crop among Indian farmers. Arun Srinivas, who used to work in finance, decided to leave his job in 2020 and invest all his savings into his family farm in Karnataka. His family had always grown coconuts and mangoes, but Arun wanted to try something new that would be good for both his mind and his wallet. After doing a lot of research, he chose dragon fruit because it needs less water and is less likely to get diseases compared to other fruits. Arun took his new job seriously. He visited about 80 to 100 farms, talked to many farmers, and learned about the challenges and profits of growing dragon fruit. He treated it like an investment project, collecting data and making careful plans. His hard work paid off, and now he grows dragon fruit on 11 acres, producing around 220 tonnes each year.
Dragon fruit is a climbing cactus, which makes it different from other fruits. Farmers usually grow it on concrete posts with a ring at the top for the vines to hang over. The fruit originally came from Central America, but now Vietnam is the biggest producer in the world. India is trying to catch up because dragon fruit gives higher returns and more stable prices than traditional crops. In 2020, the Indian government started supporting dragon fruit farmers, and more people became interested in growing it. Dr G Karunakaran, a scientist who studies dragon fruit, says that serious research on the fruit began in India around 2013 or 2014. But it was only after 2021, when the media started talking about it, that many farmers began to grow dragon fruit. One big advantage is that dragon fruit can be harvested for six months, so farmers can earn money regularly instead of just once a year.
Dragon fruit flowers are unique because they bloom only at night. For some types, farmers have to pollinate the flowers by hand in the dark. Arun uses honey bees to help with pollination, which is more natural. In Kerala, farmer Cheradeep Ma avoids going out at night because of dangerous animals like snakes and wild boars, so he grows self-pollinating varieties. Dragon fruit has helped him earn more money and keep his farm running even when coffee or pepper prices change. Dr Sunila Kumari is working to find the best types of dragon fruit for Indian farmers. She discovered that Indian customers prefer large fruits with red flesh because they look nice and taste better. She says that farmers need to use better growing and storage methods if India wants to become a big player in the global market. Right now, Indian farms produce less fruit per hectare than other countries, and they need to improve their systems and storage to sell to places like Europe and North America. Dragon fruit is helping Indian farmers earn more money and build a better future.
