Jersey Votes Big to Ban Social Media for Kids Under 16!

A recent poll in Jersey has revealed that a large majority of people support banning social media for children under the age of 16. This poll was conducted by a market research firm after the UK government announced plans to ban social media for young people. The UK’s outgoing Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, said he hopes the ban will be in place by spring 2027. The poll in Jersey found that 72% of the 839 people over 16 who responded would support a similar ban, while 23% were against it and 5% were unsure. This shows that most people in Jersey are worried about the effects of social media on children.

Many parents and experts are concerned about the risks that social media can pose to young people. Apps like TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, Snapchat, and YouTube are very popular among children and teenagers. However, there are worries about mental health problems, bullying, and harmful content that children might see online. Emma Martins, a former data protection chief in the Channel Islands, said she is glad that people are finally talking about these issues. She believes it is important to protect children, but she also warns that there is no simple solution.

The poll also showed that 33% of parents said their children under 10 use social media, and this number rises to 79% for children aged 10 to 15. This means that many young children are already using these platforms, even though they are not always safe. Lindsay Jefferies, who led the research, said that the survey was not fully representative of the whole population, but it did show a clear pattern. Women and parents were more likely to support a ban. Many people who answered the poll said they were worried about peer pressure and how hard it is to control what children do online. They also said that a ban could help make things fairer for all children. However, some people pointed out that it would be difficult to enforce such a ban and make sure children do not find ways around it. The poll was open to people aged 16 and over in Jersey, Guernsey, the Isle of Man, and Gibraltar.
