Blast Off Soon! Meet the Artemis II Crew Heading Beyond the Moon

NASA is preparing for the Artemis II mission, which will be the first crewed journey around the Moon in over fifty years. The mission is set to launch as early as the first week of February, with the exact date depending on both the readiness of the rocket and the position of the Moon. The Artemis II crew consists of four astronauts: Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, Mission Specialist Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen. They will wear bright orange suits designed for space travel and will ride aboard the Space Launch System rocket and the Orion Space Capsule.

On Saturday, NASA plans to move the massive SLS rocket and Orion capsule from the Vehicle Assembly Building to the launch pad, a process that will take up to twelve hours. Once at the pad, engineers will connect all the necessary equipment, including electrical lines and fuel systems. Before the actual launch, NASA will conduct a wet dress rehearsal, which is a test where the rocket is filled with fuel to ensure everything works properly. If any issues are found, the rocket and capsule may be moved back for repairs. The earliest possible launch date is February 6, but there are several other dates in February, March, and April when the Moon's position is right for the mission.

The Artemis II mission will last about ten days. The crew will not land on the Moon but will travel farther into space than any humans have before. Their main tasks include testing the Orion spacecraft's systems, practicing manual flight in Earth orbit, and checking life-support, propulsion, power, and navigation systems. The astronauts will also act as medical test subjects, sending data and images back to Earth. They will live in a small cabin in weightlessness, experiencing higher radiation levels than on the International Space Station, but still within safe limits. After their journey, they will return to Earth with a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.

Artemis II is a crucial step toward future Moon landings. NASA plans for Artemis III to land astronauts on the lunar surface, possibly in 2027 or 2028. The spacecraft for that mission has not been chosen yet; it could be SpaceX's Starship or Blue Origin's lander. New spacesuits are also being developed. After Artemis III, NASA aims to build a small space station called Gateway around the Moon and send more missions, including robotic rovers. Other countries, such as those in Europe, Japan, China, Russia, and India, have plans to send astronauts to the Moon in the coming decades. The last crewed Moon mission was Apollo 17 in 1972. The Artemis program is designed to establish a long-term human presence on and around the Moon, using new technology and international partnerships.
