Meta Sparks Fury with AI Tool Using Public Instagram Pics for Image Creation

Meta, the company behind Instagram and Facebook, has launched a new artificial intelligence tool called Muse Image. This tool allows users to create images using other people’s public Instagram profile pictures, sometimes without those people even knowing. Muse Image works by taking a few words that someone types in and turning them into a picture, using AI technology. For example, if you type 'a woman in a red dress,' the tool can make a picture that matches that description. Muse Image is available through the Meta AI app, on the web, and in WhatsApp and Instagram Stories, but only for users in the United States at the moment.

The launch of Muse Image has caused a lot of concern among privacy advocates and technology experts. Donald Campbell, who works for a group called Foxglove that fights for fairness in technology, said that letting people use others’ photos without permission is a recipe for disaster. He pointed out that there have already been problems with fake or altered images made by AI on social media, and he does not understand why Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, thinks this new tool is a good idea. Privacy International, another group that cares about people’s rights online, also criticized the tool. They said that using real people’s images without their clear permission is dangerous and could lead to privacy problems.

Meta says that users can choose to opt out of having their images used by Muse Image, even if their Instagram account is public. To do this, users need to go into Instagram’s settings, select 'Sharing and Reuse,' and turn off the option that allows people to reuse their content with AI features. There are already many AI tools that can create images from text, but Meta’s tool is unique because it uses Instagram photos, which are often pictures of real people. The tool is free for most users, but people who want to use it more often can pay for a subscription. Meta also plans to make Muse Image available on Facebook and Messenger soon, and they are working on a version that can create videos.
