Grammys Go Global: New Asian Pop and Latin Song Awards Debut!

The Grammy Awards, one of the most prestigious events in the music industry, are making significant changes to their categories. This year, they announced the addition of five new categories, including best Asian pop music performance and best Latin song. These changes come after Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny made history by winning album of the year for a record sung entirely in Spanish. His win was a milestone, showing that music in different languages can be recognized at the highest level. The Grammys are known for celebrating a wide range of music genres, and these new categories are meant to make the awards more inclusive. Harvey Mason Jr, the chief executive of the Recording Academy, said that expanding the number of categories allows the Grammys to represent more music creators, artists, writers, and producers. Last year, the Recording Academy added more Korean and Latino artists to its voting panel, which many people saw as a step toward recognizing more diverse music. Mason Jr explained that these changes were inspired by the music community, who wanted more opportunities to celebrate new and different genres.

To be eligible for the new best Latin song award, tracks must be mostly in Spanish. For the best Asian pop music performance, music from genres like K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop can be nominated. Bad Bunny, who was the most-played artist in 2025 according to Spotify, also won the best música urbana album for his record Debí Tirar Más Fotos and best global music performance at the Grammys in February. Another big moment was when the song Golden from the movie KPop Demon Hunters, performed by the fictional band Huntr/x, became the first K-pop song to win a Grammy for best song for visual media. This win showed how much Korean pop music has grown in popularity and influence around the world. The Grammys are also adding new categories for best R&B collaboration or duo/group performance, best traditional pop vocal performance, and best traditional folk album. The existing R&B performance category will now focus on solo acts, and the folk album prize will be dedicated to contemporary folk music.

The rules for the best new artist category are also changing. Now, artists can be nominated up to four times instead of three. This means that up-and-coming acts like Ravyn Lenae and Ella Langley, who have already been nominated three times, can be nominated again.
