The trouble began when Imelda Marcos, the First Lady of the Philippines, invited the Beatles to a special lunch at the Presidential Palace. She expected the band to attend, along with 300 other important guests. However, the Beatles were exhausted from their long tour in Asia, and their manager, Brian Epstein, had a rule that they did not attend official state events. Because of this, the band did not go to the lunch, and Imelda Marcos, her family, and all the guests were left waiting for them. The event was even being shown on live television, making the situation even more embarrassing for the Marcos family.

The no-show was seen as a huge insult to the president and his wife. News spread quickly, and many people in the Philippines were angry. The Beatles suddenly found themselves in a dangerous situation. Their police protection was taken away, and they were harassed by security officers at the airport.
