Silent Discos Spark Joy and Movement for Dementia Care Residents

At Osborne House Care Home in Clevedon, residents are experiencing something new and exciting called silent discos. These events are different from regular dance parties because instead of playing music through speakers, everyone wears wireless headphones. This way, each person can listen to their favorite songs without disturbing others. Audrey, one of the residents, enjoys these sessions with her daughter Sue, and many other residents are joining in too. The silent discos are part of a special program funded by North Somerset Council and organized by Community Therapy CIC. The main goal is to help people with dementia feel better and improve their well-being through music and movement. Dementia is a condition that makes it hard for people to remember things, communicate, or even move around easily. Seven physiotherapists attend the discos to help residents who have trouble moving. They support them with balance and coordination, making sure everyone can participate safely.

Alex Dickinson-Lovett, the activities coordinator at Osborne House, says it is amazing to see how the residents react when they put on their headphones. She describes how their faces light up and how even people who usually do not talk or move much start to smile or dance. Music seems to reach a part of the brain that other things cannot, especially for people with dementia. Alex believes that music is one of the last things people forget, and it helps them connect with their memories and with other people. The silent disco allows everyone to choose their own music, so some might listen to classical music while others enjoy pop or oldies. Patricia, another resident, says she loves listening to classical music during the sessions. She likes that she can enjoy her music without having to hear what everyone else is listening to.

Physiotherapist Kelly Steed explains that dementia can make people feel confused, sad, or unmotivated. Sometimes, residents might just sit quietly in a room, not wanting to do much. But when they put on the headphones and hear music from their past, something changes. They start to move, smile, and even dance. The difference is beautiful to see, and it makes the carers and families very happy. The silent discos are not just about having fun; they are also helping residents stay active and connected. The physiotherapists help with exercises and movements that improve balance and coordination, which is important for staying healthy. The silent discos are making a big difference for people living with dementia at Osborne House Care Home, bringing joy, movement, and connection to their lives.
