Music festivals are a big part of summer for many people, but this year, festival-goers are being encouraged to think differently about what they wear. Instead of buying new outfits just for the event, people are being asked to upcycle old clothes or wear second-hand items. This is because fast fashion, where people buy cheap clothes and only wear them a few times, is causing a lot of waste. According to Oxfam, a charity that works to help people and the planet, clothes in the UK are worn less than five times on average before being thrown away. Festival outfits are some of the worst for this, as people often buy something new just for one weekend.

Oxfam is trying to change this by setting up pop-up shops at festivals like Love Saves the Day in Bristol and Womad in Wiltshire. These shops sell second-hand clothes that are unique and affordable. Last year, Oxfam's festival shops saved six tonnes of clothing from ending up in landfill. Hannah Davies from Oxfam says that people need to rethink the habit of buying something new and only wearing it once. She believes that festival fashion is a great way for people to express themselves, whether it's with sparkly sets, bright catsuits, or vintage cowboy hats. The most interesting outfits are often the ones with a story behind them, not just something bought online.

Sophie Saint, known as Saint Thrifty on social media, is a big supporter of sustainable fashion. She says that trying to have the perfect festival look can lead to lots of fast fashion shopping sprees. After the summer, these clothes often end up in charity shops or go straight to landfill. Sophie thinks it's better to build a festival wardrobe slowly, choosing clothes that are good quality and can be worn many times. She warns against following fast-changing trends, which just make people buy more and more. Oxfam says that by 2050, the fashion industry could be making 138 billion pieces of unworn clothing every year, which is enough to reach from Earth to Mars and back.

Festivals are starting to help people make better choices. The team behind Love Saves the Day recently held a workshop where people could swap, repair, or customise their clothes. These upcycling events are becoming more popular, as people look for ways to make their festival outfits unique without buying new things. Charlotte Jackson, who works on sustainability for Team Love, says that festivals have a responsibility to challenge the throwaway culture. She encourages people to buy less, choose well, and think about second-hand or upcycled clothes. Festival fashion should be about creativity and self-expression, not just buying more stuff. Festivals can play a big role in changing how people think about fashion and help make the industry better for the future.
