Paul Blakemore has spent the last six months exploring the unique world of the Hempsted Meadow car boot sale in Gloucester. With his beard and microphone, Paul set out to capture the voices and stories of both buyers and sellers at this lively event. ' He thinks that car boot sales are different from shopping on the high street, which he says is 'dead. ' Instead, car boot sales are a kind of counter-culture, where people come together to recycle, reuse, and repurpose things.

Instead of just collecting more items for his own home, Paul decided to collect stories. He used old cameras and film, all bought from car boot sales, to record his conversations. He talked to a wide range of people, including activists, artists, families, regular visitors, and the event organizers. One artist named Juice shared her experience of selling her artwork for the first time at the car boot sale. She also sold clothes, furniture, and even old games consoles. Juice said, 'People are buying and they don't know how happy they're making me because it's stuff I've held onto emotionally for such a long time. ' Another trader, Zaneb, also shared her story. Paul enjoyed listening to the haggling that happens at car boot sales. Sometimes, sellers would lower their prices if they knew their item was going to someone who would really appreciate it. There were even stories of buyers getting lucky, like the man who bought a clock for £10 and later found out it was worth £1,000.

Paul's project, called Car Boot Soul, is an interactive community arts project. Visitors can see objects, listen to audio recordings, and hear poetry inspired by the car boot sale. The project will be added to the Gloucester Archives and will also travel to Paul's local car boot sale in Cheddar, Somerset, at the end of August. Paul said that the best part of the project was meeting so many different people and hearing their stories. He described the process as 'fun' and 'co-creative. ' He hopes that his project will help others see the value of car boot sales, not just as markets, but as places where people connect and share memories. Paul believes that everyone has a story to tell, and car boot sales are the perfect place to listen and learn from each other.

He hopes that more people will visit car boot sales and experience the unique atmosphere for themselves.
