Lagos Transforms into a Vibrant Open-Air Street Art Wonderland

Lagos, Nigeria's largest city, has been transformed into a vibrant 'open-air gallery' thanks to its first-ever street art festival. The event has brought colorful murals and creative artwork to the city's busy streets, making art accessible to everyone, not just those who visit galleries. According to one of the featured artists, Ashaolu Oluwafemi, the festival is about bringing art directly to the people and the community. He explained that many people do not have the chance to attend exhibitions, so this festival allows them to experience art in their everyday lives.

The festival has turned places like Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue in Victoria Island into showcases for large, eye-catching murals. These paintings feature people in sunglasses, couples dancing, and women holding globes, all set against the backdrop of Lagos's bustling traffic and city life. Oluwafemi, who was born and raised in Lagos, said that the artists are telling the story of the city and its growth. He believes that living in Lagos requires wisdom, strength, and brilliance, and his mural with binoculars and the slogan 'We Are Alive' reflects the energy and resilience of the city's people.

Although Lagos is known for its lively arts scene and nightlife, street art is still relatively new. Painter Ernest Ibe noted that street art is not as visible in Nigeria as it is in other African countries, but he believes the country is evolving. People are beginning to understand the social impact of murals and how they can improve the environment. Another artist, Babalola Oluwafemi, who traveled from Manchester, painted a mural of a woman and a peacock to show how Lagosians love to celebrate, eat, and dress in colorful clothes. The peacock is a symbol of beauty and pride in Nigerian art. She said that the city is full of cars, traffic, and people who appreciate the artwork.

The festival features mostly Nigerian artists, but some international artists, like Ottograph from Amsterdam, also participated. The event started on Wednesday and will continue until Monday, December 15, but the murals will remain on display afterward. People walking by often stop to admire the art and compliment the artists. Oluwafemi said that Lagos is a place where people can express themselves, and the street art brings joy to the community. The festival is helping to highlight the creativity and uniqueness of Lagos, making art a part of everyday life for its residents.
