'Let's start a conversation about black hair'
Photographer Rayh Mohammed from Hull has opened a new exhibition called Hair: Identity in the AfroWorld at the Ferens Art Gallery. The exhibition celebrates black hair and aims to start a conversation about the challenges faced by black and mixed heritage people when it comes to hair care. Many people find it difficult to find salons that understand the unique needs of black hair, which often leads them to rely on family and friends for help. Rayh, who is 34 years old and originally from Nigeria, explained that in Hull there are very few salons that cater to the specific textures and styles of black hair. Because of this, the idea of a home salon, where people do each other's hair, is very common in the black community. Rayh loves her afro hair and describes it as versatile and strong. She appreciates how it defies gravity and teaches patience, sometimes requiring people to be self-sufficient in caring for it. The exhibition features photographs and stories from volunteers in Hull who share their personal relationships with their hair. Visitors can also learn about traditional braiding styles and hair care techniques that have been passed down through generations. Rayh hopes the exhibition will help people, especially children, feel validated and proud of their hair and identity.
