William Heath Robinson was a well-known British artist and cartoonist who became famous for his unique and imaginative drawings. Born in 1872, he moved from London to the peaceful village of Cranleigh in 1918, where he lived for 11 years. Many people believe that the calm and quiet of Cranleigh helped him develop his creative style. Early in his career, Robinson illustrated classic books like The Arabian Nights and stories by Hans Christian Andersen. However, it was during World War One that he truly found his own artistic voice.

Robinson became famous for his cartoons of strange and complicated machines. These inventions were often made from pipes, pulleys, and platforms that looked like they could fall over at any moment. His drawings were funny and clever, and they gave people something to smile about during the difficult times of war. Because of his work, the phrase 'a bit Heath Robinson' became popular in Britain. People used it to describe anything that was put together in a complicated or silly way.

While living in Cranleigh, Robinson built a studio in his garden so he could work without being disturbed. He even invented a speaking tube to the house so he could ask for tea or dinner without leaving his work. Robinson put his love for life and his sense of humor into every drawing.
