X takes action on deepfake network smearing UK politicians after BBC investigation

X, a well-known social media platform, has taken decisive action against a network that was involved in spreading false information about UK politicians. The network, which targeted Labour's Wes Streeting among others, was found to be sharing manipulated video clips and posting misleading comments to manipulate public opinion. The BBC's Undercover Voter project uncovered the activities of these accounts, prompting X to remove multiple accounts and posts associated with this network. This marks the first time that X has addressed such allegations in over a year, despite being contacted numerous times in the past. The social media company, previously known as Twitter, underwent significant changes following its acquisition by Elon Musk in 2022, resulting in widespread job losses, including within the communications team. Previously, emails to X's press office triggered an automatic reply featuring a poo emoji, but the response has since been updated to indicate that they are currently busy and to check back later.
