Staffordshire Police Tests AI Agents to Speed Up 101 Non-Emergency Calls
Staffordshire Police is set to begin a trial using artificial intelligence agents to help answer calls to their 101 non-emergency service. The goal is to reduce waiting times for people who call 101, allowing human call handlers to focus more on urgent 999 emergency calls. The AI agent, called Agentforce, will be able to handle simple requests for information, so callers do not always need to speak to a real person. This new system is expected to make the process faster and more efficient for everyone.
In the past, people who called Staffordshire Police's 101 number sometimes had to wait a long time before their call was answered. Over the last year, the average wait time has improved, dropping from 7. 1 minutes to 3. 3 minutes. The number of people who hang up before getting help has also gone down, from 29. 2 percent to 18. 7 percent. However, there are still some callers who have to wait over an hour, which is a concern for the police. Acting Chief Constable Becky Riggs explained that the AI agent will be able to recognize when a caller needs urgent help or is at risk. If the system hears certain keywords that suggest an emergency or vulnerability, it will transfer the call to a human operator right away.
Other police forces, like Thames Valley Police, have already started using AI agents and have reported positive results. John Bloomer, the assistant chief officer for resources, said that the AI agent will only be used for non-emergency calls. In the future, it might also help direct people to other organizations if their issue is not something the police can help with. Staffordshire Police is also making an effort to call back people who had to wait a long time on the 101 line, to apologize and learn more about why they called. This has helped the police gather important information and build trust with the public. The hope is that by using AI technology, Staffordshire Police will be able to provide better service to everyone who needs help, especially for non-emergency situations.
