Race Against Time: Stitching a Stunning Bayeux Tapestry Replica by 2027!

Mia Hansson, a dedicated artist from Cambridgeshire, is racing against time to complete her own full-size replica of the Bayeux Tapestry. The original tapestry, which is nearly 1,000 years old and stretches 70 meters long, tells the dramatic story of the Norman conquest of England in 1066. Next September, the British Museum will display the real tapestry in London as part of a cultural exchange, and Mia is determined to finish her replica before the tapestry returns to France in 2027. She began her project in 2016, looking for a challenge that would keep her busy for years. Since then, she has been sewing steadily, completing about 6 meters each year. Now, after nine and a half years, she has finished almost 55 meters and has just under 14 meters left. Mia admits that the pressure is on, especially with the real tapestry coming to London soon. She wants to finish before the excitement fades, saying, 'If I finish the following year, I'll be old news. '

Mia's love for embroidery started when she was just six years old. Her strict Swedish grandmother taught her to sew and made sure her stitches were neat on both sides. Mia quickly discovered she had a natural talent for embroidery. Now, she works from a detailed plan, carefully copying every detail from the original tapestry, including the mistakes made by the original seamstresses. She even invented a character named Mildred, a 'rebel seamstress' from the 11th century, to explain some of the odd details in the tapestry, like a bird that looks tipsy or a leg that seems to bend the wrong way. Mia says she sometimes has to make her lines less straight to match the original's imperfections, even if it means undoing her own work.

The Bayeux Tapestry is famous for its limited color palette, using only seven main colors. Mia sticks to these colors to keep her replica authentic. She has also created five coloring books and a larger book with 25 full-scale embroidery patterns for other enthusiasts. This new book will be available next year, and Mia hopes it will be sold at the British Museum during the tapestry's visit. As for her replica, she is not ready to sell it yet, but it could be worth up to one million pounds. Mia says she will only consider selling it after she finishes, as the project has become a big part of her life. She imagines her tapestry could one day be displayed in the same kind of special case as the original, offering visitors something spectacular to see, even if it is not the real thing.
