Honoring the First Asian Woman Cop: A Winter's Lion Film in the Making

A new film is being made about Karpal Kaur Sandhu, the first female Asian police officer in the United Kingdom. Karpal was born in Zanzibar, East Africa, in 1943 and moved to the UK in 1962. She started her career as a nurse at Chase Farm Hospital in Enfield, but in 1971, at the age of 27, she joined the Metropolitan Police. She worked at Hornsey and Leyton police stations, becoming a pioneer for Asian women in law enforcement. Karpal was known for her caring nature and her desire to help people in her community.

Unfortunately, Karpal's life was cut short when she was murdered by her husband just two years after joining the police. He did not approve of her career, believing it was not suitable for an Asian woman. He was sentenced to life in prison for her murder. Despite her tragic end, Karpal's achievements have inspired many people. She broke barriers and showed that women from all backgrounds could serve in important roles like policing.

The film, titled 'A Winter's Lion,' is currently being filmed in London, in the same areas where Karpal once worked. Director Dhruv Bhatnagar said he could relate to the challenges Karpal faced, as he also grew up without many British-Indian role models. Dr Parvinder Shergill, who is both a doctor and the film's producer, is playing Karpal. She said she feels honored to portray such a trailblazer and has worked closely with Karpal's family to accurately tell her story. The Metropolitan Police, including the Sikh Association, have supported the film, and the team hopes it will be a tribute to Karpal and all women serving in the police today. The film is expected to be released next year, and the crew hopes it will help Karpal's story reach people around the world.
