Wolverhampton Kids Shine in New Book Series Celebrating Community and Strength

Satnam Rakhra, a local author from Wolverhampton, has launched a new children’s book series called 'The Kids from Chapel Ash'. This series is set in the Chapel Ash area of Wolverhampton and is inspired by Rakhra’s own experiences growing up in the city. He remembers that when he was a child, the books he read at school rarely featured characters who looked like him or came from families like his. This lack of representation made him want to create something different for today’s children. Rakhra believes that seeing your own community in a story is important because it tells children that their lives and experiences matter. He also wants to show a positive side of Wolverhampton, which he feels is often misunderstood or given a bad reputation in the media.

The series currently has three books released: 'QUIET', 'STAYING', and 'SHARING', each with a colorful cover and a unique story. The books follow a group of schoolchildren as they deal with real-life issues such as friendship, bullying, and finding where they belong. Each book focuses on a different child from the same community, exploring themes like honesty, kindness, and resilience. Rakhra’s background as a social worker for 30 years has deeply influenced his writing. He says that children often have to deal with big emotions, and he wants his stories to show that hope and strength come from within the children themselves, not just from adults stepping in to help.

Rakhra’s Sikh values also play a role in shaping the stories, but he is clear that the books are not about preaching religion. Instead, he wants to model good character and show that values like kindness and honesty are important for everyone, especially in a multicultural society. The series is aimed at young readers aged seven to thirteen and will eventually include 11 books. Rakhra hopes that his stories will help children feel seen and valued, and that they will encourage pride in their own communities. He invites readers to share their own stories and ideas for what should be covered in Wolverhampton, showing that everyone’s voice matters.
