Drivers of 2 Hong Kong light rail trains suspended from duty after collision injures 24 passengers

Two light rail train drivers in Hong Kong have been suspended from their duties following a collision. This incident occurred during the peak hours of Friday evening in Tin Shui Wai, near the border with mainland China. The collision resulted in 24 passengers sustaining injuries. The train bound for Yau Oi, numbered 751, collided with train 761P, which was headed for Yuen Long. This happened around 7pm near the Hang Mei Tsuen stop in the New Territories. The MTR Corporation, which operates the rail service, reported that a train driver halted immediately after the collision and informed the control centre, which then alerted the police. Nineteen of the injured passengers were transported to nearby hospitals.

The MTR Corporation has pledged to investigate the incident and has suspended the drivers involved in the collision from their duties. This accident marks the third collision involving light rail trains in the past three months. A collision three weeks ago resulted in three people being injured, while a collision in July resulted in no injuries. The Transport and Logistics Bureau expressed deep concern over these collisions and has urged the MTR Corporation to investigate the accidents to prevent any future occurrences. The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department has instructed the railway company to complete its report on Friday's accident as soon as possible. Nineteen of the injured passengers were transported to nearby hospitals, including Tuen Mun Hospital, Pok Oi Hospital and Tin Shui Wai Hospital. Five individuals left the scene after receiving medical assistance.

Speculation suggests that human error may have been a factor in the Hong Kong light rail train collision. Local media outlets have published videos and photos showing at least two passengers wearing neck braces and lying on stretchers, while one man's left arm was bandaged. Some passengers, including children, were observed sitting on the ground as they awaited assistance from emergency services. The railway company reported that the incident caused a brief disruption in train services, but uninjured passengers were able to continue their journeys on other trains.
