China adopts GM technology for corn, soybeans in major food security manoeuvre

China has been planning a significant shift in its agricultural practices for over a decade. The country has now expanded the commercial use of genetically modified (GM) crops, specifically corn and soybeans. This move is part of China's strategy to ensure food security, despite ongoing public debates about the use of GM technology. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs has approved 37 GM corn varieties and 14 GM soybean varieties for commercial planting. This is a significant development, considering China's heavy reliance on soybean imports. Previously, the application of GM technology was limited to papaya and cotton. This decision marks a new era for China's seed industry, aiming to improve self-sufficiency for its vast population and reduce its food trade deficit. The approved GM varieties, bred for stronger herbicide or insect resistance and higher yields, can be grown in designated areas after November 15. Major domestic seed companies, including Beijing Dabeinong Biotechnology, have developed these strains. China has pledged robust support for leading breeders through a 2021 action plan designed to boost the industry. However, the initial commercial adoption of these GM crops is unlikely to result in immediate large-scale planting and will have a minimal impact on import demand. The public's acceptance of this change remains uncertain, as GM food has sparked safety concerns. Nevertheless, the adoption of GM food could offer strategic advantages, preparing China for potential future disruptions in food imports.
