Stoke-on-Trent's Epic Clubbing Mural: A Colorful Nightlife Timeline
Phil Johnson and Bob Leigh are two men from Stoke-on-Trent who want to celebrate their city's clubbing history in a big way. They have come up with the idea to create a large mural, which is a painting on a wall, to show how important clubbing and nightlife have been in Stoke-on-Trent. The mural would be very large, about 5 meters tall and 25 meters wide, and would tell the story of the city's clubs and DJs from the 1960s up to today.
Phil got inspired to do this after seeing murals in Rochdale, a town in Greater Manchester. He thought that if Rochdale could have murals, then Stoke-on-Trent, which has given so much to the world, should have one too. He remembered a mural in Hanley that was made to celebrate the city's 100th birthday, which showed 100 faces of people from Stoke-on-Trent. Phil and Bob want their mural to focus on the city's nightlife and clubbing culture. They are looking for the perfect wall to paint on, and some possible places are The Potteries Centre or a big wall near the local Tesco.
The mural would start with The Place, a club that opened in 1963 and is believed to be the first discotheque in the UK. It would also show other famous clubs like Shelleys Lazerdome, Club Kinetic, The Antelope, and Valentino's. Last year, Phil and Bob put up blue plaques to mark where old clubs used to be and even gave tours to visit these places. Many people enjoyed remembering the old days, but some were sad that the clubbing scene is not as strong as it used to be. Bob thinks the mural is a big and ambitious idea, but he believes people will love it. He points out that Manchester has many big murals and people really enjoy them. Phil and Bob hope their mural will help people remember the good times and feel proud of their city's clubbing history.
